Tapo C120 vs C210: a pet camera for a shared rental?

You want to check on a pet while away, but the room also belongs to other people. Start by agreeing what may be recorded. Then choose whether a fixed view or a movable lens actually helps; the camera with more features is not automatically the better shared-home choice.

We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

Portability & ecosystem fit

Pack, place & remove
A stable shelf can avoid drilling, but both need wired power and safe cable routing. Reassess the entire possible view for C210 pan/tilt.
Ecosystem fit
Plan the Tapo account, supported sharing and permitted Wi-Fi together. A pet camera is not automatically a compatible sensor in every home-automation platform.
Offline & shared use
Local microSD storage is distinct from remote viewing. Check the exact model’s recording behaviour during a connection loss rather than assuming cloud-free means account-free.
Complete ownership cost
Include a suitable storage card; optional Tapo Care features have separate plan conditions. Agree on audio, retention and when monitoring must stop.
At the next address
Review viewers immediately when housemates change. Remove account access and recordings appropriately before transfer, and retain the correct adapter.

Check the current C120 security advisory

Security update — checked 23 October 2026: TP-Link identifies Tapo C120 V1 fixed firmware 1.9.3 Build 260521 for CVE-2026-15315. Match your region and hardware, then use the supported update path. This does not establish every camera or service is free of vulnerabilities. Read TP-Link’s advisory and update instructions. For a different fixed-camera choice, see C120 versus Wyze Cam v4.

Choose the view before the camera

Identify one specific purpose, such as seeing whether a pet has settled in its bed. Draw the necessary viewing area and the places that should remain outside it. A fixed view may make the arrangement easier to understand. A pan/tilt camera can look in more directions, which also expands the privacy discussion.

Agree on recording times, audio, who can watch live and what happens when a guest visits. Do not point either camera into private rooms, another unit or a shared hallway as a shortcut to monitoring your own door. Building requirements and applicable rules still need their own check; this guide does not determine whether an installation is legally permitted.

Local recording is a storage choice, not total privacy

A microSD card can provide local recording without buying a cloud recording plan for that function, but confirm the exact camera, card requirements and enabled features. Local storage does not establish that the app uses no account or online services. Decide whether a stolen or failed camera could also mean losing its local footage.

Price the camera with a suitable card, and use the manufacturer’s card compatibility guidance before buying. Storage limits can vary by hardware version and firmware. Do not copy a maximum card size from another C210 revision or assume a random bundled card is appropriate for continuous recording.

Check the privacy control people can actually use

TP-Link documents Privacy Mode as stopping video/audio streaming and recording when enabled. An app setting is different from a physical lens cover, and the owner may be able to change it remotely. Do not describe these models as having the mechanical privacy mechanism of a different Tapo camera.

Agree how housemates can confirm that monitoring is off, what happens if an account holder is away and when the camera should simply be disconnected. Use separate supported access invitations, a protected owner account and a clear deletion/retention plan. The roommate privacy checklist is worth completing before setup.

Check power, Wi-Fi and removable placement

  • Use a stable freestanding position with the intended view and safe cable routing. A useful view does not require drilling.
  • Confirm the required Wi-Fi and app setup on the landlord-managed network before the return deadline.
  • Do not run power cables through a moving door or create a trip hazard to reach an outlet.
  • Avoid recording a screen, documents or a reflection that reveals more than the direct view suggests.

Neither model replaces checking on an animal appropriately or provides a guarantee of safety. A remote view is useful information, not proof that every event will be detected or recorded.

Which product fits the agreed purpose?

C120, wired power

Tapo C120 fixed-view camera

Consider it if: one fixed indoor view covers the pet area and the household agrees to that view

Skip it if: you need remote pan/tilt or cannot place a powered camera without capturing private activity

Single camera; microSD storage card is a separate purchase.

C210, indoor

Tapo C210 pan/tilt camera

Consider it if: remote pan/tilt has a defined purpose and everyone has agreed to its possible viewing area

Skip it if: a fixed view is enough or a movable camera would undermine the household agreement

Single camera; verify hardware version and compatible storage card.

Before moving or sharing the device

Decide who owns the card and footage. Before selling or leaving the camera, preserve anything you legitimately need, remove relevant shared access, deal with stored recordings and follow the exact account-removal and reset instructions. Do not give the next person your personal login.

If a roommate moves out, review access at the time of the change rather than waiting for the next tenancy. A camera that remains in place should not quietly retain an old viewer. Keep the original power adapter and model information for the next setup.

Our recommendations are conditional judgments about system fit, required components and renter constraints. Manufacturer features are not independent performance measurements. Check current instructions for the exact regional hardware.
