Tapo C120 vs Wyze Cam v4: local recording for a shared rental

A camera that stores video on a memory card can avoid a recurring recording bill. It does not automatically avoid accounts, remote-access services or household privacy problems. This researched comparison focuses on fixed-view rental cameras and the practical difference between finding a card recording and tapping a paid cloud event.

We compared current manufacturer documentation and relevant owner questions. We have not hands-on tested these products. US and Canadian models, offers and requirements are distinguished; ordinary retailer links earn us no commission.

No recording subscription

Both have a local-storage route

Budget for a compatible card and learn its playback screen. A cloud-event paywall is not proof that microSD recording requires that plan.

Current C120 hardware

Check its security update first

TP-Link identifies C120 v1 fixed firmware 1.9.3 Build260521 for CVE-2026-15315. Match regional hardware and update instructions.

Shared room

Agreement comes before camera choice

Decide the view, audio, active hours, access and deletion together. A motion zone does not necessarily remove the rest of the image from recordings.

These are documented capabilities, not a picture-quality, alert-speed or security-resilience test. We do not declare the sharper or more dependable camera from a resolution label.

Build one complete indoor kit

For an agreed pet-bed view, count one camera, the correct supply and cable, a supported endurance-rated microSD card and a freestanding or otherwise permitted placement. Keep the outlet accessible so recording can visibly stop. A magnetic base is convenient only where the surface and placement are secure.

Start with camera + card + suitable power + permitted mounting + any chosen annual cloud plan, separately in CAD or USD. Compare the exact one-camera package, not a Wyze promotional bundle against a bare Tapo device. Current regional checkout prices were not established here; we have not inserted a made-up saving.

Find the recording before paying for another feature

A homeowner discussion about Wyze v4 describes confusion between event previews and card playback. The manufacturer documents a subscription-free microSD route. Open the camera’s live view and the microSD/playback control rather than treating every Events-tab upgrade prompt as a local-recording requirement.

For either camera, format a supported card in the app, deliberately set the recording schedule and confirm the chosen time can be replayed. Then practise exporting a short non-sensitive clip. Do this while deciding whether to keep the camera. We have not verified current menu labels on every phone or performed these checks on physical units. Check Wyze’s current card-size table.

Check firmware before pointing it into a home

TP-Link’s August 27, 2026 advisory names Tapo C120 v1 and lists 1.9.3 Build260521 as the fixed firmware for CVE-2026-15315. Its C200 details are separate; do not assign every vulnerability in the advisory to C120. Use the matching regional support page or app and its current update process, not an unrelated hardware image. Read the original advisory.

Wyze’s current v4 release notes list 4.52.17.26, September 23, 2026, addressing SD playback audio/video mismatch, with a gradual rollout note. Check what the app offers for your camera. Wyze also disclosed a February 2024 account/event-mapping incident. That historic service incident predates v4’s launch and should not be described as a newly found v4 defect. Neither update notes nor local storage prove a system free from future risk.

Local storage and household privacy are different questions

Agree whether audio is necessary, who has access, which hours are active and how long ordinary footage is retained. Keep sleeping, changing and private work areas out of view. Use supported individual sharing rather than distributing an account password. Check the live image with the people who share the space before recording.

A detection zone can limit alerts without masking everything outside it. Do not call it a privacy mask unless that exact function is documented. A card can be physically removed with the camera, and remote app access still has service dependencies. If you need an entirely offline recorder, this comparison does not establish either app camera as that solution.

Make the camera earn its place

A simple acceptance routine is more useful than accumulating settings: replay one agreed event, find the preceding timeline if continuous recording is enabled, stop recording, and verify each invited person can use the controls they need. Repeat the relevant playback check after updates rather than presuming a successful setup never changes.

If a housemate becomes uncomfortable, stop and revisit the arrangement. A neighbour checking on a pet, an existing door contact or no recording may be a better answer. Before moving, save only needed clips, remove sharing and accounts through supported procedures, and securely erase or retain the card. Reassess the next home’s view, permissions and network from the beginning.

C120; verify hardware revision

Tapo C120

Consider it if the fixed agreed view and updated regional firmware meet your needs.

Skip it if household recording is unresolved or you require fully offline operation established by testing.

Single fixed camera; a compatible microSD card is separate. Confirm the regional hardware revision and supplied power accessories.

Wyze Cam v4

Consider it if you prefer the Wyze app and understand SD playback versus paid cloud features.

Skip it if you expect all cloud event tools free or assume obsolete512GB guidance applies.

Portability & ecosystem fit

Pack, place & remove
Small fixed cameras can move with their supplies; placement must still be agreed and safe.
Ecosystem fit
Tapo and Wyze account/app paths differ; neither is established here as a native Matter or HomeKit camera.
Offline & shared use
Local card recording is distinct from remote app access, alerts and offline playback guarantees.
Complete ownership cost
Add a supported card and outdoor supply only where needed; cloud plans are separately selected costs.
At the next address
Review exports, revoke household sharing, remove account binding and erase or retain the microSD securely.

Sources & how we compared

Manufacturer specifications establish supported features, not measured performance, reliability or savings. Our recommendation is an editorial judgment about the complete setup. Linked owner discussions are anecdotal and dated; current official instructions take precedence.

Sources checked 22 October 2026. Manufacturer claims are not measured results. Owner accounts raise questions, not defect rates. Exact product links and clearly labelled retailer searches are distinguished; no current stock or matched regional checkout total is implied. Report a correction.
