A roommate privacy checklist for shared smart-home devices
A shared home needs shared expectations. Decide who can control equipment, what it records and how access ends before installing it. An account invitation should not become an invitation to someone’s unrelated personal information.
Agree on spaces and recording
List every camera, microphone and sensor, including doorbells and devices with occupancy history. Discuss where it points, when it records, who can view it and whether it captures visitors or common areas. Avoid installing recording devices in private spaces. Check applicable privacy and building requirements; agreement between roommates alone does not settle every legal question.
Invite people instead of sharing passwords
Use separate user accounts and the least access that is useful. Check whether a guest role can change settings, view history, unlock doors or invite others. If the system cannot separate those permissions, choose a simpler use or another product. Protect the owner account with a unique password and supported multifactor authentication.
Make everyday controls fair
Everyone should be able to operate essential shared lighting without borrowing the owner’s phone. Agree on quiet hours, voice assistants, schedules and notifications. Give people a clear way to stop an unwanted automation. Do not make a shared room dependent on a person who is away or has moved out.
Write down ownership and costs
Record who bought each device, who pays subscriptions, and what happens if a subscription stops. Avoid storing payment credentials in a shared account when separate billing is possible. Check whether historical recordings or device logs remain available after a person loses access.
Revoke access when circumstances change
When a roommate leaves, remove their invitations, temporary codes and third-party integrations as appropriate. Review router access and recovery contacts. If ownership changes, follow the manufacturer’s transfer and reset procedure. A factory reset and removal from a cloud account can be separate steps; verify both where required.
