Wi-Fi extender vs travel router: RE315 or Opal for a rental?
Two boxes promise to help you connect, but “better signal in the bedroom” and “my own local network” are different jobs. Use TP-Link RE315 and GL.iNet Opal as concrete examples so you do not buy an extender when you needed routing—or another router when you only needed coverage.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- RE315 needs a suitable outlet within useful source coverage; Opal needs its adapter and supported uplink. Allow space and cables for the actual arrangement.
- Ecosystem fit
- An extender addresses coverage; a permitted routed LAN can serve a different local-device job. Neither automatically fixes client isolation or guarantees casting.
- Offline & shared use
- Check local-device communication separately from internet access. Neither product creates upstream capacity or service when the building connection fails.
- Complete ownership cost
- Include Ethernet and any missing accessories. RE315’s 10/100 port and the chosen operating mode matter more than its wireless-class headline.
- At the next address
- Remove old upstream details and ask the next administrator about supported equipment. Recheck coverage, local discovery and reconnection in the new layout.
Documentation-based fit assessment, not a hands-on test or compatibility certification.
Identify the failure before the product
Describe one repeatable problem. “The phone loses Wi-Fi in the bedroom” suggests investigating coverage. “Streaming is slow everywhere at busy times” may involve upstream congestion. “The phone has internet but cannot find the TV” may involve local discovery or isolation. Those observations do not produce a complete diagnosis, but they stop every problem being labelled weak Wi-Fi.
Ask who controls the upstream router and whether personal network equipment is allowed. Check whether the building offers an approved access point, Ethernet handoff or private network for your unit. An administrator-supported solution may make either purchase unnecessary.
Same shopping category, different functions
| Job | TP-Link RE315 | GL.iNet Opal GL-SFT1200 |
|---|---|---|
| Main roles in this comparison | Range extender or access point | Travel router with supported routed/repeater arrangements |
| More coverage | Investigate its extender placement and source signal | Do not treat a personal router as an automatic coverage cure |
| Personal routed local network | Do not assume extender/AP mode creates one | Investigate the documented router mode and upstream rules |
| Wired ports | One 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port | Gigabit WAN and LAN ports; check chosen mode |
| A common buying mistake | Expecting another Wi-Fi name to guarantee privacy | Expecting a new router to remove upstream congestion |
The Canadian RE315 specification and Opal product documentation describe hardware and modes. These are not speed or coverage measurements from our rental.
When RE315 is the sensible candidate
If extension is permitted, choose a location that can still receive a useful signal from the source, rather than simply placing the extender in the dead zone. Investigate the exact setup method and required access. Do not press WPS on or change a landlord’s equipment without permission.
With an approved wired connection, RE315 also has an access-point role. Its documented 10/100-Mbps port matters if you intend to use Ethernet; “AC1200” describes wireless-class marketing and does not make that port gigabit. Mesh features also depend on the exact compatible upstream equipment and firmware, not just the presence of any router.
When a travel-router design fits better
If the aim is to keep your own phone, TV and other equipment on a personal routed LAN, a supported Opal configuration is a different proposition from extending the building’s network. Confirm wireless versus wired uplink, administrator rules and the exact firmware instructions. A bridge or access-point mode is not the same configuration as a routed private network.
A second router can introduce double NAT. Check work VPN, gaming or remote-access requirements before assuming it is suitable. Do not turn off a firewall as a troubleshooting shortcut. Our Beryl AX versus Opal comparison is the next decision only after you know that this kind of router is the right tool.
What neither box promises
- Neither creates extra upstream internet capacity when the building connection is congested.
- A different network name alone does not prove isolation or complete privacy.
- An extender is not a guaranteed cure for client isolation, captive-portal logins or casting discovery.
- A fast advertised radio rate is not a prediction of speed at your desk.
For each important function, test a full workflow: joining, internet use, local device control, then reconnection after a normal restart. Use the return period to check the supported design in the actual location.
Products for the two different jobs
AC1200 range extender
TP-Link RE315
Consider it if: an approved extender or access-point arrangement addresses a measured coverage need
Skip it if: you need a private routed LAN or expect its Ethernet connection to be gigabit
Plug-in extender; an Ethernet cable may be needed for access-point use.

GL.iNet Opal
Consider it if: the provider permits a personal routed network and its supported connection method matches your setup
Skip it if: you only need a coverage fix or cannot resolve restrictions on additional routers
Router; check the included power adapter.

Send a useful question to the administrator
Try: “My phone has internet in the living room but loses connection in the bedroom. Is a personal extender allowed, and is there a supported wired access-point option?” For discovery, explain instead that both devices have internet but cannot see each other. The distinction helps the administrator answer the actual problem.
Keep any approved arrangement and model information with your moving checklist. A setup that is permitted here still needs a fresh check at the next address.
