Beryl AX vs Opal: which travel router fits landlord-provided Wi-Fi?
Your rental includes Wi-Fi, but you want your own devices on a network you control. Beryl AX and Opal are real options to investigate; the first decision is whether another router is permitted and useful on that connection.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- Pack the router, correct power adapter and required Ethernet cables as one kit. Include any extra switch in the shelf-space calculation.
- Ecosystem fit
- This supplies a network, not a universal smart-home controller. Casting and local device control depend on the chosen routed arrangement and upstream permission.
- Offline & shared use
- Separate local communication from internet access. Check each essential device and reconnection after an upstream outage; a new router cannot restore the building connection.
- Complete ownership cost
- Count accessories and any optional services separately. Keep firmware current and retain the administrator recovery details privately.
- At the next address
- Ask the next provider about personal routers before reconnecting. Review saved uplinks, household passwords and any double-NAT-sensitive applications.
Documentation-based fit assessment, not a hands-on test or compatibility certification.
Start with the connection you actually receive
Write down whether you receive an Ethernet socket, an ordinary Wi-Fi password or a browser sign-in page. These are different starting points. Ask the landlord or network administrator whether a personal router is allowed and whether they offer a supported private connection for your unit. A purchase cannot supply permission that the network does not grant.
A useful question is: “May I connect a personal router for my own devices, and which connection method do you support?” Ask about device registration and connection limits too. Do not copy another resident’s network identity or bypass a building restriction.
Beryl AX and Opal: the differences that affect a rental
| Buying question | Beryl AX GL-MT3000 | Opal GL-SFT1200 |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi generation | Wi-Fi 6 hardware | Wi-Fi 5 hardware |
| Wired connections | One 2.5 GbE WAN and one 1 GbE LAN port | One 1 GbE WAN and two 1 GbE LAN ports |
| USB port | USB 3.0 | USB 2.0 |
| Simple reason to shortlist | You have a specific need for the newer hardware or faster uplink | Two wired LAN clients and basic connectivity matter more |
| Performance evidence | No Renter Tech Guide speed or range benchmark | No Renter Tech Guide speed or range benchmark |
These are manufacturer specifications, not apartment speed results. One gigabit upstream service, a crowded wireless uplink or an old client can limit either setup. A faster WAN port has little value if your actual connection cannot use it. Check the manufacturer’s model comparison before deciding.
Choose the network arrangement before the model
For a supported Ethernet handoff, a router can create your own local network without also depending on a wireless uplink. For Wi-Fi-only service, investigate the exact model’s repeater/router configuration. The mode matters: a simple bridge or extender should not be assumed to provide the same separation as a routed private network.
Keep your phone, streaming receiver and other devices that need local communication on the appropriate personal network. Google documents setup limitations on networks with client isolation and captive portals. A travel router is not a universal workaround; confirm the permitted design and test it. See GL.iNet’s repeater instructions and our landlord Wi-Fi checklist.
What another router will not fix
- A congested or unreliable upstream internet service remains a bottleneck.
- A second router can introduce double NAT; some games, inbound connections and remote-access arrangements may need a different supported design.
- A separate Wi-Fi name alone does not establish isolation or complete privacy. Configuration and upstream access still matter.
- Captive-portal support varies. Follow the provider’s rules rather than assuming every login page will work.
Both models are listed Active in GL.iNet’s firmware table at this review. That supports checking their current firmware; it is not a promise about future support length. Do not choose an old firmware build just because a forum tutorial uses it.
Price the small system, not just the box
Compare the Canadian checkout total for the exact model and power adapter, any Ethernet cable you need, and any services you independently choose to use. These are routers, not standalone cellular subscriptions. Do not assume a SIM slot, battery or mobile-data plan is included.
A renter who needs two wired devices should count the cost and space of any extra switch required by the chosen arrangement. A renter with one laptop and already reliable Wi-Fi may need no additional hardware. Your decision can be that simple.
Which model would we shortlist?
GL-MT3000
GL.iNet Beryl AX
Consider it if: you can name a useful capability in its hardware specification and the upstream network permits your intended configuration
Skip it if: you expect its advertised Wi-Fi rate to repair a weak or congested building service
Router; check the included Canadian-compatible power supply.

GL.iNet Opal
Consider it if: the supported connection and available LAN ports cover your modest setup
Skip it if: you need capabilities outside its documented hardware or firmware support
Router; check the included power adapter.

Test the complete household workflow
- Update firmware using official instructions, set a unique administrator password and use supported wireless security.
- Test internet access from every essential device, then local casting or printing between your own devices.
- Check work VPN and gaming behaviour if those are important; do not disable the firewall as a shortcut.
- Restart the router and verify that the supported upstream connection returns without unexpected manual steps.
- Keep packaging and record the return deadline while you evaluate the setup.
When moving, keep the router and its power supply together, check the next network’s rules and review who still knows the password. Use the moving checklist to keep accounts and equipment together.
Comparing another manufacturer?
For the separate Beryl AX versus TP-Link buying decision, compare GL-MT3000 with TL-WR1502X. That guide distinguishes supported wireless-upstream modes, portal sign-in and power requirements. Start with your permitted connection before choosing a model.
