Deco X55 in an apartment: do you actually need mesh?
An apartment can have a difficult Wi-Fi corner without needing three new routers. Establish whether the problem is coverage, the internet service or a shared-network restriction before buying a Deco multipack.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- Units and power supplies move easily; a supported Ethernet connection for the primary unit remains necessary.
- Ecosystem fit
- This is Wi-Fi networking, not a Zigbee/Thread controller or automatic private-network solution in every mode.
- Offline & shared use
- Local networking and upstream internet are separate. A mesh node cannot repair a failed or overloaded upstream service.
- Complete ownership cost
- Count the entire selected pack, cables and any optional HomeShield services; do not treat pack pricing as single-unit pricing.
- At the next address
- Keep units and adapters paired, reassess router/AP mode and network rules, then retest local discovery and coverage.
Documentation-based fit assessment, not a hands-on test or compatibility certification.
Diagnose one weak location before changing the network
Use the same device to compare a spot near the existing router with the weak location. Note whether the problem happens everywhere at busy times or only behind a particular wall. If the upstream service is slow in both places, a mesh purchase does not create more internet capacity.
Repositioning a permitted existing router, using an available Ethernet connection or asking the provider about its supported equipment may solve the problem without a new system. A network administrator’s isolation policy is a different issue from radio coverage. Do not buy mesh as an assumed workaround for restrictions.
The connection diagram matters more than the pack
| Question | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Ethernet handoff available? | The primary Deco needs a supported wired upstream connection |
| Existing router retained? | Decide the supported router or access-point arrangement |
| Cable between units possible? | Wired backhaul can replace the inter-unit wireless link |
| Wireless backhaul needed? | The satellite needs a useful connection to the main unit |
| One unit covers the home? | Additional nodes may add cost without solving a problem |
One, two or three is a placement decision
TP-Link lists multiple X55 pack sizes on its Canadian product page. That does not mean every retailer has every size. The Amazon.ca offer we checked is a three-pack, so compare that complete checkout total with smaller supported alternatives before ordering. Do not split a warranty or import assumption across unidentified marketplace units.
A second wireless unit needs to be positioned where it can communicate usefully with the first, rather than placed at the very end of a dead zone simply because that is where coverage is wanted. Dense apartments can also have crowded radio conditions. We have not measured X55 performance in your building.
Router mode and AP mode have different roles
If an existing gateway remains responsible for routing, check TP-Link’s access-point guidance. If Deco becomes the main router, understand its upstream arrangement and possible double NAT. AP mode and router mode should not be assumed to provide the same household isolation or feature set.
X55 supports Ethernet backhaul. A cable between units can change the design, but it is not permission to alter fixed wiring. Use existing suitable connections or a safe removable route, and follow the manufacturer’s topology instructions. Do not create loops by improvising several paths between network devices.
Keep smart-home discovery in the evaluation
After choosing the permitted design, check the actual jobs: phone-to-speaker casting, local printing, home-hub commissioning, work VPN and any essential wired equipment. A speed result alone does not establish that those interactions work. Put devices that need local communication on an appropriate supported network.
Compare basic management with optional HomeShield services and current subscription terms. A security-service badge is not proof that the network is private from all upstream operators. Use strong unique administrator credentials and supported updates rather than weakening security to make discovery work.

Consider it if: your permitted network and placement plan justify the selected three-unit package
Skip it if: you only receive unsupported Wi-Fi-only service, or one existing router already covers the rental
Linked Canadian offer is a three-pack; do not assume a single-unit price.

A purchase can be smaller than the marketing diagram
Test a minimal supported arrangement during the return period, then add nodes only where their placement solves the identified problem. Keep adapters with their units and record the configuration for moving. Do not claim the manufacturer’s maximum floor-area figure as measured apartment coverage.
For included Wi-Fi without a wired handoff, read the extender versus travel-router guide first. For permitted personal routing, the Beryl AX versus Opal comparison covers a different job from simply purchasing more mesh nodes.

Our recommendations are conditional judgments about system fit, required components and renter constraints. Manufacturer features are not independent performance measurements. Check current instructions for the exact regional hardware.
