SwitchBot Lock Ultra vs August Wi-Fi: keep the rental deadbolt?

A retrofit motor can add phone access without replacing the outside key cylinder. That is useful when a household wants different access methods, but it does not establish permission to modify a rental door. This documentation-based comparison starts with the lock already fitted, then prices the equipment needed for the same job.

We compared current manufacturer documentation and relevant owner questions. We have not hands-on tested these products. US and Canadian models, offers and requirements are distinguished; ordinary retailer links earn us no commission.

One connected lock

August avoids a separate Wi-Fi bridge

The Wi-Fi Smart Lock includes Wi-Fi; do not buy the older Smart Lock/Connect package assuming it is the same model.

SwitchBot household

Ultra can join the existing system

Check the actual compatible Matter bridge and available capacity. A keypad in the package does not establish that a bridge is included.

Rental access

Retain a practical manual route

Check original keys and interior operation after an approved installation; neither motor repairs a stiff bolt or guarantees against lockouts.

This is not the earlier SwitchBot Lock Pro, August Smart Lock Pro or a test of break-in resistance. Lock Ultra Vision bundles add different outside controls; those are not silently included in this comparison.

Do the mechanical check before the shopping list

Photograph the interior and exterior hardware for your own records. Identify whether this is a separate single-cylinder deadbolt rather than assuming every thumbturn is the same mechanism. Use the maker’s drawings to check clearance to trim, handle, door edge and any existing chain or swing bar. Ask support about an unlisted lock instead of forcing an adapter.

Check that the existing key and interior control move the bolt smoothly with the door open and closed. A motor should not be used to overcome a rubbing strike or an incorrectly aligned door. Discuss necessary repairs with property management before attaching equipment. Canadian and US lease, building and local requirements differ; a removable accessory does not itself establish approval.

Choose the whole access basket

For household phone access, list the lock and fitting parts first. For remote unlocking, add the exact network path. August’s Wi-Fi model has its connection built in. Ultra requires the supported hub arrangement for the connected functions at issue. Confirm the intended platform and firmware in SwitchBot’s current Matter compatibility guide.

For a cleaner or visiting relative who should not need your app account, check the appropriate keypad and supported temporary-access controls. Count its mounting permission and power supply too. Do not buy a fingerprint or face-recognition bundle solely because the lock headline advertises many unlock methods; a bare motor does not provide every listed method.

Charging changes the fallback routine

August specifies two CR123 cells; use the exact recommended chemistry and replacement instructions. Its advertised battery duration is not a prediction for your door, signal conditions or usage. Budget for appropriate replacements rather than assuming a rechargeable cell with similar dimensions is interchangeable.

SwitchBot documents a rechargeable main pack with a backup pack. Importantly, its support article says automatic locking is temporarily disabled while the main pack charges and the backup is active. That is a concrete household instruction: tell others and check the door deliberately during charging. Backup power does not remove the need to understand manual operation or keep an appropriate physical key accessible. Read Ultra’s charging note.

Investigate owner concerns without inventing a failure rate

August owner discussions raise battery consumption and intermittent connectivity. Those reports identify useful checks: the actual door’s friction, usable signal at the closed door and the phone permissions required by the chosen automatic-unlock feature. They cannot establish a current failure rate or prove another lock performs better.

A recent Home Assistant community request asks for clearer Ultra main/backup battery information. Third-party integration visibility is a separate question from what the manufacturer app reports. Verify the actual warning path you will use. Do not let a dashboard replace the physical-key plan, and do not assume an app’s “locked” report proves the door is securely closed.

US and Canadian costs without a misleading cheap winner

No matched current Canadian and US retailer baskets were verified here, so we do not publish a saving. Compare lock + required adapter + chosen keypad + required hub/controller + initial and replacement batteries + tax/delivery, in one currency at a time.

August’s current direct-store page contains an out-of-stock/notification control; that does not prove every retailer is unavailable, but it makes seller, warranty and exact generation especially important. Compare the actual package rather than the cheapest headline. A keypad already owned is useful only if the manufacturer confirms compatibility with this lock.

Make leaving as manageable as arriving

Before relying on automatic entry, follow the manufacturer’s installation and calibration process and check approved manual/key operation while safe access is maintained. Give household members individual supported access rather than a shared master login. Decide who removes a departing roommate and who keeps the original parts.

When moving, revoke digital access and reset/transfer ownership through the supported process, then restore the original hardware as agreed. Keep screws and adapters labelled. Start the next home’s fit check again. If your only problem is occasionally forgetting keys, a household key routine may be more suitable than adding batteries, accounts and door hardware.

Exact models & regional retailer links

US retrofit package; select exact keypad/hub bundle

SwitchBot Lock Ultra

Consider it if the exact fit and complete bridge/keypad basket meet the need.

Skip it if you assume the keypad supplies Wi-Fi/Matter without checking the bridge.

The Canadian link is the Lock Ultra + Keypad Touch package, not a bare lock. Check whether a compatible bridge is included or must be added.

Wi-Fi Smart Lock, fourth generation

August Wi-Fi Smart Lock

Consider it if compatible single-cylinder retrofit and its built-in connection/native HomeKit route are useful.

Skip it if the door is incompatible or you do not want the approved replacement-cell routine.

Portability & ecosystem fit

Pack, place & remove
Retrofit equipment can be removed, but each door needs permission, exact fit and original parts retained.
Ecosystem fit
August documents native HomeKit and built-in Wi-Fi; Ultra’s connected Matter route needs a compatible SwitchBot bridge.
Offline & shared use
Retained physical/manual access must be checked; remote functions add network and service dependencies.
Complete ownership cost
Compare equivalent keypads/hubs, adapters and suitable batteries; there is no verified matched regional saving.

Remove obsolete users and reset ownership, restore agreed hardware and recheck the next deadbolt.

Sources & how we compared

Manufacturer specifications establish supported features, not measured performance, reliability or savings. Our recommendation is an editorial judgment about the complete setup. Linked owner discussions are anecdotal and dated; current official instructions take precedence.

Sources checked 22 October 2026. Manufacturer claims are not measured results. Owner accounts raise questions, not defect rates. Exact product links and clearly labelled retailer searches are distinguished; no current stock or matched regional checkout total is implied. Report a correction.
