Sony WH-CH720N vs soundcore Q20i for a shared apartment
When your desk and someone else’s television share a room, headphones can keep your own audio personal. Choosing active noise cancellation is a separate decision: neither pair promises to make voices, footsteps or a noisy building disappear.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- Include the charging cable and suitable protection in the bag. Try fit with your glasses and normal seated routine instead of treating quoted weight as comfort evidence.
- Ecosystem fit
- These are personal Bluetooth audio devices with companion-app options, not smart-home controllers. Check computer/phone multipoint and the exact meeting app separately.
- Offline & shared use
- Check your intended audio source and control route without internet. Two-device pairing does not mean simultaneous audio mixing or guarantee the work-call microphone selection.
- Complete ownership cost
- Confirm charging equipment, return conditions and any employer restrictions on companion apps. Keep a household agreement for attracting attention while headphones are worn.
- At the next address
- Remove unnecessary old Bluetooth pairings before lending or selling. Keep charging and storage practical at the next shared desk.
Documentation-based fit assessment, not a hands-on test or compatibility certification.
Start with one recurring distraction
Write down whether the problem is listening without disturbing others, hearing a call clearly or reducing your awareness of background noise. Existing wired headphones might already solve the first job. A change to TV hours or desk position might solve more than another electronic purchase. Headphones also cannot resolve a building maintenance problem that needs its own response.
For a shared desk, make two short lists: what you must hear, such as a housemate addressing you, and what you would prefer to notice less. Agree on a way to get your attention. An ambient or transparency setting can be convenient, but it is not proof that every important sound will remain audible.
Compare the documented functions

|---|---|---|
| Noise modes | ANC and Ambient Sound controls | ANC, Normal and Transparency modes |
| Two-device use | Check Sony multipoint setup instructions | Documented dual connections |
| Published battery headline | Up to 35 hours on Sony Canada’s page | Up to 40 hours ANC on; 60 hours normal mode |

| Important model check | 720N is an older model; 730N also exists | Q20i is not the older Life Q20 |
These are manufacturer descriptions under their conditions, not a head-to-head battery test. Longer quoted runtime does not establish better noise cancellation, microphone quality or comfort. Check current firmware requirements and the exact model rather than relying on a search result that groups several generations.
ANC is not a promise about neighbour noise
Sony explains that noise cancellation is most effective against lower-frequency noise and does not cancel every sound. The fit and seal also matter. Do not interpret a manufacturer percentage or the number of microphones as the amount of noise that will disappear in your room. Speech, abrupt sounds and different placements are different challenges.
We have not listened to these headphones or measured noise reduction. If distracting impacts are coming through the building, avoid assuming that the more expensive pair must fix them. Investigate the source and practical household arrangements before spending more. Use a return period to evaluate the actual task, rather than expecting a specification sheet to describe your apartment.
Check the whole call, not only Bluetooth pairing
Pair with the actual work computer and phone, then try a permitted test call. Confirm which microphone and speaker the meeting application selected. Ask a willing participant whether your voice is understandable in the normal desk position; keep this a personal suitability check, not a published performance claim.
Multipoint means a supported connection to two devices; it does not mean two audio streams are mixed. Try an incoming phone call while the computer has an application open, then switch back. Investigate your employer’s device policy before installing a companion app. If switching causes frustration, a simple dedicated work headset may fit the job better.
Comfort needs your own check
Wear the candidate with your usual glasses and hairstyle during ordinary seated use. Notice pressure at the temples, heat, ear contact and whether controls are easy to find. A published weight is only one part of fit. The lightest specification is not a comfort guarantee, and another reader’s favourite is not automatically yours.
Keep listening at a comfortable level rather than turning it up to overpower the room. Follow the product instructions and take breaks as needed. These consumer headphones are not hearing protection. This guide makes no health or sleep claims and does not recommend wearing them where reduced awareness would be unsafe.
The two models to inspect

Sony WH-CH720N headphones
Consider it if: the older model’s fit and controls suit you and its current price makes sense beside the newer 730N
Skip it if: you are paying a latest-generation price or need a guaranteed cure for speech and impact noise

Keep the purchase small and reversible
Check whether a suitable cable, charger or protective case is already available before adding accessories. Compare the complete checkout cost and the seller’s return conditions, including any conditions for opened headphones. Do not assume a USB-C charging connector also makes the headphones a USB computer headset.
- Record the exact model and update instructions.
- Remove unnecessary old Bluetooth pairings before lending or selling.
- Keep charging cables clear of desk-chair wheels and walking routes.
- Try your existing headphones and a household quiet-time agreement before buying.
