A closer look for renters
Sony WH-CH720N review for a shared rental home office
The WH-CH720N belongs on a shared-desk shortlist when personal listening and two-device convenience matter. It should not be bought as a way to soundproof an apartment or to guarantee clear calls on every work computer.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- Check actual fit and a protective storage arrangement; do not assume the listing includes a carrying case.
- Ecosystem fit
- Bluetooth links to compatible source devices. Sony app settings are distinct from Wi-Fi smart-home control and television compatibility.
- Offline & shared use
- Personal Bluetooth listening does not need landlord Wi-Fi, although source content, calls and some app functions may need internet.
- Complete ownership cost
- Check current firmware, Canadian warranty and accessory costs. No guaranteed battery lifespan or future support term is established here.
- At the next address
- Remove unnecessary pairings before transfer, protect headband and cups, and keep a suitable charging cable with the headphones.

Define the shared-desk job first
A single room can be an office, living room and somebody else’s place to relax. Decide whether you need to keep your own audio private, reduce awareness of steady background noise, or take calls. Those jobs overlap but are not identical. An existing wired pair may solve private listening while a better household schedule does more for an important call.
Sony’s WH-CH720N offers noise-cancelling and Ambient Sound controls, with supported two-device connection instructions in its help guide. Those are useful functions to evaluate, not proof of how it will feel or sound in your particular rental. We have not worn these headphones, measured attenuation or assessed their microphone in a real meeting.
This is a documentation-based review, not a hands-on test. We have not measured cleaning, sound, runtime or reliability. Recommendations reflect the exact model’s documented functions and the rental constraints explained below.
Multipoint is not an audio mixer
The useful rental scenario is a work laptop and personal phone, with the ability to switch appropriately. Follow Sony’s exact multipoint instructions and current app requirements. Pairing two devices does not mean that two soundtracks are mixed. A device that remains connected can also behave differently when a meeting application claims the microphone.
| Renter requirement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Computer and phone | Verify supported multipoint and actual switching |
| Meeting microphone | Check the input selected by the call application |
| USB-C connector | Do not assume charging makes it a USB audio headset |
| Shared room noise | ANC does not guarantee silence or call privacy |
| Model lifecycle | 720N is older; compare 730N before buying |
Try the full sequence: a laptop call, a phone notification or incoming call, then returning to the laptop. Your employer’s device and software policies may limit companion-app installation. Ask about those constraints before making app-based functions part of the purchase justification.
Noise cancellation has a defined role
Sony explains that noise cancellation does not cancel every sound and is generally more effective for lower-frequency noise. A published microphone count is not a measurement of how much speech, impact noise or television you will stop noticing. Fit and the listening situation matter. Do not pay a premium expecting a structural noise problem to disappear.
Agree how a housemate will get your attention. Ambient Sound can be useful, but it does not establish that every alarm or important sound will be heard. Keep awareness appropriate to the task and surroundings. These are consumer headphones, not hearing protection, and this review does not make health or sleep-treatment claims.
Fit is a purchase condition, not a specification winner
Try ordinary seated use with your glasses, usual hairstyle and normal head movements. Notice pressure at the temples, ear contact, heat and whether you can find the buttons without looking. A lower published weight cannot guarantee your comfort. Nor can a photograph show how a seal changes with your glasses.
Check the seller’s return conditions before opening, including any conditions applying to headphones. Use a modest comfortable listening level instead of overcoming room noise by continually turning up the volume. The best decision may be to keep a pair you already own if a change of fit is the main uncertainty and its other functions work.
Portable audio within a smart household
Bluetooth audio does not require the headphones to join the landlord’s Wi-Fi. That makes them easier to carry between the rental, a work desk and another permitted device, provided each device supports the needed audio connection. It does not make them a Wi-Fi smart-home controller. Keep the distinction between app settings, Bluetooth connection and a voice assistant’s functions clear.
If listening to a television or other household device matters, verify that exact device’s headphone workflow. A TV’s network connection alone says nothing about compatible Bluetooth audio or delay. Do not assume the same pair can stay connected to every room’s equipment at once. A short list of deliberately managed pairings can be more practical than constantly moving between shared devices.
The older-model price and complete kit
The WH-CH720N is an older model, and Sony also lists WH-CH730N. Compare the actual Canadian checkout cost rather than treating the familiar number as a current flagship. Check included cables, suitable charging equipment and any protective storage you need. Do not assume a case is included merely because another Sony bundle shows one.

Consider it if: its fit and verified computer-and-phone workflow justify its current price beside the newer model
Skip it if: you need guaranteed speech blocking, USB computer audio or confidential calls in a shared room

Check current firmware support and Canadian warranty eligibility through Sony and the seller. No fixed software-support end date or future battery life is established here. Keep that uncertainty separate from the manufacturer’s maximum-runtime claim.
A first-week checklist that answers the real question
Make a willing test call using the actual computer and application, confirming the selected input and output. Ask whether your voice is understandable at the normal desk position. That is an individual compatibility check, not evidence that the headphones have passed a published microphone test. Check reconnection after an ordinary restart as well as initial pairing.
- Try the required two-device switching sequence.
- Wear them with the glasses and posture used at work.
- Check physical controls and charge access.
- Remove unnecessary old pairings before lending or selling.
- Store safely for the next move rather than crushing them loose in a box.
