Sonos Roam 2 vs JBL Flip 7: Wi-Fi system or portable speaker?

A portable speaker can be part of a home system or simply play from your phone. Decide which role you need before comparing volume or buying a second speaker for a small rental.

We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens

Portability & ecosystem fit

Pack, place & remove
Both move between rooms and homes; count charging equipment and understand which functions travel without Wi-Fi.
Ecosystem fit
Roam 2 joins supported Sonos/Wi-Fi functions. Flip 7 is a Bluetooth/Auracast product, not a Wi-Fi smart speaker.
Offline & shared use
Bluetooth playback can avoid the home network, but an internet music service still needs its own connection.
Complete ownership cost
Check charging contents, optional docks/accessories and any music subscriptions; do not buy another speaker just to fill a group.
At the next address
Review account and voice access, change household/network settings and use supported reset or transfer procedures.

Choose where the music comes from

Write down your source: a phone beside you, AirPlay from a compatible Apple device, an existing Sonos household or another supported service. A Bluetooth speaker is often enough for the first job. Joining an existing Wi-Fi system is a different reason to buy.

Do not treat “portable” as one feature. It can mean carrying a battery speaker outdoors, moving music between rooms or packing a home system for the next tenancy. Those uses can favour different connectivity even when both speakers fit in a bag.

The meaningful difference is the connection

Shared Wi-Fi can change the Sonos decision

Roam 2’s Wi-Fi features require an appropriate supported network. A landlord network that isolates devices or requires a browser sign-in may not behave like your own home network. Check Sonos’s current setup requirements before buying for multiroom listening or AirPlay.

Bluetooth can still provide a different playback route, but it is not equivalent to every Sonos system function. Decide whether a phone-bound speaker already meets the need. Do not add a travel router without confirming the building permits the design and the device setup is supported.

Check the grouping generation and charging kit

Flip 7’s compatible grouping is not a promise that it pairs with every older JBL speaker. Match the exact grouping technology and supported models before buying a second unit. Likewise, a small Sonos portable should not be assumed to serve as any surround or stereo component you want.

Compare what is actually in the charging package and any adapter or dock you need. USB-C on a device does not by itself tell you what cable is supplied or how a computer-audio mode works. Use the current firmware and connection instructions for the particular feature.

An apartment purchase should not depend on maximum loudness

We have not tested tone, bass, room correction, latency, runtime or maximum output. Manufacturer ratings are not evidence that one speaker will sound better on your shelf. If possible, evaluate ordinary listening at the levels you actually use and check the return conditions.

In shared housing, headphones may be the more suitable purchase for late-night listening. Neither a small speaker nor room tuning guarantees that sound will not travel through a wall. Place equipment considerately, agree quiet hours and avoid building a larger system before the first speaker solves a real routine.

Choose the system role you need

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth portable speaker

Sonos Roam 2

Consider it if: you will use its documented Wi-Fi/Sonos or AirPlay role on a suitable permitted network

Skip it if: Bluetooth alone meets the need or the building network cannot support the intended features

White Roam 2; check charging cable and adapter contents.

Portable Bluetooth speaker, black

JBL Flip 7

Consider it if: portable phone playback and explicitly compatible grouping fit your plans

Skip it if: you need a Wi-Fi multiroom system or assume compatibility with every older JBL model

Single black Flip 7; check charging cable/adapter contents and compatible grouping generation.

Take the speaker, not old household access

Before moving, review voice-assistant links and account/household membership. If giving the device away, follow its transfer/reset process instead of leaving a personal music or voice account attached. Keep the charging kit together.

At the next address, test the new network before rebuilding a Wi-Fi group. For private listening rather than room audio, see our shared-apartment headphone comparison.

Our recommendations are conditional judgments about system fit, required components and renter constraints. Manufacturer features are not independent performance measurements. Check current instructions for the exact regional hardware.
