Sensibo Sky vs Air for a rental mini-split
A mini-split controlled by an infrared remote is a different job from replacing a wall thermostat. Sensibo can add a connected remote-control path, but first confirm the exact AC and remote, then decide which platform features justify the controller.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- A plug-in infrared controller can move, but it needs an appropriate position and compatibility with the next AC remote.
- Ecosystem fit
- Air has documented native HomeKit support. Sky’s Siri Shortcuts wording is not the same as native Apple Home support.
- Offline & shared use
- Remote app/service functions depend on the documented network path; retain the original AC remote and normal controls.
- Complete ownership cost
- Count one controller per relevant unit, suitable power and any optional paid features you actually need.
- At the next address
- Keep the controller and supply together, remove old shared access and pair the next remote using the manufacturer’s process.
Documentation-based fit assessment, not a hands-on test or compatibility certification.
Begin with the original remote
Identify the indoor unit and remote model and use Sensibo’s compatibility guidance. The relevant starting point is an infrared-controlled AC or heat pump. A wired thermostat or a radio-only controller is not automatically equivalent just because it changes temperature.
Keep the original remote in working condition. Describe the unit and any operating restrictions to property management if needed. A connected remote is not permission to alter fixed HVAC wiring, bypass an equipment limit or change a building’s control system.
App control and Apple Home are different decisions
| Question | Sensibo Sky | Sensibo Air |
|---|---|---|
| Basic approach | Connected infrared controller | Connected infrared controller |
| Native Apple HomeKit | Not documented as a native HomeKit model | Manufacturer documents HomeKit certification |
| Siri wording | Supported Siri/Shortcuts features are not native HomeKit | Check current HomeKit and app feature differences |

Placement is part of compatibility
An infrared controller needs a suitable path to the AC. Put it where the manufacturer’s placement guidance supports communication and where power is available without modifying the rental. Do not hide it behind a cabinet because the Wi-Fi signal still reaches that spot; Wi-Fi and infrared are different links.
The place that reliably reaches the AC may not represent the temperature where you sit. Check how the exact model measures and uses temperature and whether an optional room sensor is actually supported and included. Do not assume a sensor from another Sensibo package is in the single-controller offer.
Pay for HomeKit only if it is the job
Air is the sensible model to investigate when you specifically need native Apple HomeKit integration. For Sky, Siri support in a title should not be interpreted as the same Home app accessory behaviour. Verify the commands and modes exposed by the chosen platform, not just whether its logo appears on the box.
An Alexa or Google household may find the entry model’s documented features sufficient. App-specific schedules, geofencing, modes and paid features can differ from third-party platform functions. Write down the few actions you need and check each against the current support information.
Separate purchase cost from ongoing service
Check the current Sensibo plan table and checkout terms for the functions you intend to use, including what remains after any trial. Do not price a temporary subscription benefit as a permanent included feature. A multi-head system may require more than one controller, so a single-device price may not represent the whole rental.
We have not measured temperature accuracy, energy savings or response time. Do not turn a manufacturer’s savings claim into an expected Canadian bill reduction. If the original remote and its timer already solve the routine, keeping them is a valid decision.

Sensibo Sky
Consider it if: the exact IR remote is compatible and the documented Sky controls satisfy your routine
Skip it if: you specifically need native Apple HomeKit or have not checked service-feature costs
Single controller; confirm power adapter and exact remote compatibility.

Sensibo Air
Consider it if: native HomeKit is useful and the unit, placement and complete setup meet its instructions
Skip it if: you would pay extra without using the additional supported capabilities
Single Air; room sensor and optional services may be separate.

Evaluate without giving up the original controls
Use the manufacturer’s pairing procedure and check the modes you actually use with both the original remote and the chosen app/platform. Understand state synchronization and recovery instructions instead of assuming every method always reflects the other. Keep normal manual access to the AC.
Before moving, revoke obsolete access and retain the supply and model details. Recheck the next unit’s remote and control rules. For a wider portable system, use our setup planner before buying a second controller or an additional platform hub.
Already own a Cielo controller?
Our Sensibo Air versus Cielo Breez Plus comparison covers the separate cross-brand decision. Cielo’s official Plus page is marked Discontinued as checked 22 October 2026. Keep a working supported controller when it already handles your routine; verify support, warranty and returns before buying remaining stock.
