Ring Battery Doorbell in a rental: get the no-drill mount right
A battery doorbell avoids a wiring job, but it still needs a permitted position and a mount that matches its exact generation. This guide focuses on the 2024 first-generation Ring Battery Doorbell and the corresponding official No-Drill Mount.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- Battery operation avoids fixed wiring; attachment, removal and charging access still need planning.
- Ecosystem fit
- Use Ring’s documented app and supported integrations. This is not a generic Matter or Apple Home camera.
- Offline & shared use
- Live viewing, alerts and recording have network/service dependencies; it is not an offline recording promise.
- Complete ownership cost
- Count the matching mount and a current Canadian recording plan if you need saved video, plus replacement adhesive as required.
- At the next address
- Remove according to instructions, review saved recordings and sharing, and use Ring’s ownership-transfer/reset process.
Documentation-based fit assessment, not a hands-on test or compatibility certification.
Permission and viewpoint come before the mount
Ask about door attachments and hallway-facing cameras before ordering. A no-drill plate does not grant permission to record common areas or neighbours’ doors. Agree an appropriate field of view and audio use, and use available privacy settings. This guide is a product-fit discussion, not a statement that an installation is legally permitted.
You may discover that an ordinary doorbell, existing intercom or no camera is the better solution. A renter inside an apartment building has different constraints from somebody with a private exterior entrance. Do not install first and rely on the word “removable” to resolve a dispute later.
Match the name and generation exactly
| Item | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Battery Doorbell (2024) | First-generation Battery Doorbell, Satin Nickel linked offer |
| Official No-Drill Mount | Listing explicitly includes first-generation Battery Doorbell |
| Battery Doorbell 2K / newer model | Different generation; use its own model-specific mount |
| Other Plus/Pro models | Check their generation, not just the Plus/Pro name |
| Clamp or third-party mount | A separate product requiring its own fit and door-clearance checks |
Read the surface exclusions before attaching anything
Ring describes the first-generation No-Drill Mount for smooth, even surfaces and excludes glass and rough surfaces such as brick, shingles and rough stucco. Do not treat every painted wall as equivalent. Follow its preparation, curing and removal instructions and verify the finish is suitable.
The doorbell screws to the adhesive-backed plate; “no drill” does not mean no hardware or no removal procedure. Keep any release tool accessible and preserve the parts needed for charging and removal. Do not obstruct door movement, a closer, a latch or safe access.
Price the recording job separately from live view
Decide whether you need live answering, saved event video or particular advanced alerts. Ring distinguishes basic live features from saved recording and plan features. Check the current Canadian plan name, coverage and renewal price directly; a trial is not a permanent recording entitlement.
A useful basket is doorbell plus correct mount plus the chosen plan over your intended ownership period, plus any separately needed chime or power equipment. Avoid a hardwired installation merely to save charging effort unless it is separately permitted and suitable. This guide evaluates the removable battery arrangement.
Check the network at the actual door
A working phone inside the living room does not establish a reliable camera connection at the entrance. Verify the model’s supported Wi-Fi, app notifications and the permitted network arrangement. Building client isolation or sign-in portals can change suitability. Do not bypass a building network restriction.
Check notifications while your phone is on mobile data, and understand the difference between a live event and a saved recording. We have not tested video quality, battery runtime, theft resistance or delivery detection. No mount is presented as theft-proof.
The specific first-generation pair
First-generation Battery Doorbell
Ring Battery Doorbell (2024)
Consider it if: you deliberately want this first-generation model and have resolved permission, view, Wi-Fi and recording needs
Skip it if: you think this is the newer 2K model or need recording without checking plan requirements
Satin Nickel device; not the newer Battery Doorbell 2K; verify included mount and charging cable.

Ring No-Drill Mount
Consider it if: you own the supported first-generation doorbell and have a suitable approved smooth surface
Skip it if: your doorbell is a newer generation, or the intended surface is excluded
Mount only; not the second-generation/2K doorbell mount.

Remove the device and the access when moving
Follow Ring’s mount-removal instructions rather than pulling the plate away from paint. If moving it, reassess the next surface and use the specified replacement attachment materials. A successful first attachment does not establish the next one will be safe.
Review shared users, recordings and account ownership before transferring the device. Use our household privacy checklist to decide whose phone and account remain connected. Keep packaging and model details so a future mount purchase does not become another generation mismatch.
