Eve Energy vs Tapo P125M: when is a premium smart plug worth it?
If you want a lamp to switch on at bedtime, both plugs can do that job in a supported setup. Eve adds power metering and a Thread route; the Canadian P125M is a simpler Wi-Fi on/off plug. Neither choice is sensible until you know which controller and network you can use.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation, Canadian offers and selected owner discussions. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.
Basic switching
Tapo P125M
Lower observed package cost for on/off control; no energy monitoring on the US/Canada model.
Metering + Thread
Eve Energy
A reason to pay more if you can use the supported energy view and already have—or deliberately want—the Thread infrastructure.
Eve vs Tapo: what you gain and give up
| Question | Eve Energy, Matter over Thread | Tapo P125M |
|---|---|---|
| Accessory connection | Thread; Matter controller and Thread border router required | 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; no Thread border router needed for this accessory |
| Power monitoring | Yes; view/features depend on app, platform and firmware | No on the US/Canada P125M; do not confuse it with KP125M or P110M |
| Apple Home infrastructure | Compatible Apple home hub plus suitable Thread route | Compatible Apple home hub; existing Wi-Fi router alone is not that hub |
| Manufacturer account | Eve says no Eve account, cloud or subscription | Tapo app/account route available; direct third-party Matter setup is also documented |
| Manual use | Physical button | Physical button |
| Dim an ordinary bulb? | No: switches its power on/off | No: switches its power on/off |

Canadian prices: the plug is only part of the basket
| Purchase | Eve Energy | Tapo P125M |
|---|---|---|
| Linked offer | $59.95 for one plug | $35.51 for a three-pack |
| One lamp, buying the linked package | $59.95 | $35.51; two plugs left over |
| Three lamps | $179.85 for three singles | $35.51 for one three-pack |
| Missing Apple Home equipment | Add suitable home hub / Thread border router if absent | Add suitable home hub if absent |
| If you already own a HomePod mini | It can provide the required Apple hub/Thread roles when correctly set up | It can provide the required Apple home-hub role when correctly set up |

The observed three-lamp device-only difference is $144.34; adding missing controllers changes it. Do not divide a multipack price and pretend that is the checkout cost for one lamp. The Tapo offer was sold/shipped by Amazon US with an import notice; Eve’s was sold by Amazon.ca. Confirm the exact plug, Canadian warranty, import conditions and final bill. Prices change; these are dated observations, not live offers.
Use required plug packages + missing controller/Thread equipment + tax and delivery. If you are buying a hub solely to automate one lamp, compare that whole basket with a timer or manual control first. Eve offer · Tapo offer.
When Eve is worth paying for
You want to inspect consumption: Eve measures power use. Confirm that the app/platform you will actually use exposes the readings you need. In an Apple Home setup, Eve documents its iPhone/iPad app for its additional charts and schedules; do not promise the same interface inside Apple’s Home app. Current firmware and platform support matter.
You already use Thread: Eve can reuse a suitable controller and border router. It is a powered Thread router node, so it can relay Thread traffic; it does not become a border router or replace the home hub. This is a network role, not a measured promise of fewer disconnections.
You prefer no separate manufacturer account: Eve’s no-Eve-cloud/account approach is a documented distinction. Your chosen Apple, Google or other platform still has its own account, remote-access and privacy arrangements. “No Eve cloud” is not “no data processing anywhere.”
When Tapo is enough—or neither plug is needed
You need basic on/off control: if you already have the required platform equipment and permitted Wi-Fi, paying for metering you will never open may add no value. P125M’s lower observed package cost is its practical advantage here. Tapo supports direct Matter setup in a third-party app; its manufacturer recommends its own app first for full features and firmware updating.
You cannot manage the rental network: pause before buying either one. Tapo still needs suitable Wi-Fi/local discovery, and a Thread border router still needs a supported connection back into your setup. Neither product grants access to isolated landlord Wi-Fi.
Your lamp needs another button press after power returns: a plug may restore power without turning the light on. Check the lamp’s instructions and behaviour. Keep its physical control reachable. Do not use this lamp comparison as advice to automate heaters, cooking equipment or unattended high-load appliances.
Owner problems translated into checks
| Reported concern | What to check before replacing hardware |
|---|---|
| P125M works in Tapo but not Apple Home after a Wi-Fi change | A 2024 Reddit owner report describes this. Use current official pairing and network guidance; its reset sequence is not a universal cure. |
| Energy data is not where the buyer expected | An older Eve discussion illustrates app confusion. Current Eve platform/app documentation takes precedence over old Android or firmware limitations. |
| A premium plug still shows “No Response” | An Eve owner discussion describes account/Home changes. It does not establish hardware failure or a comparative reliability result. |

These are selected, self-reported examples from different dates and installations, not a representative review sample. We have not verified their causes. The useful pre-purchase question is whether you control the required network and understand the recovery path, not which brand has no complaints.
A calmer pairing and recovery sequence
- Record the exact home-hub model and software. Apple names HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet among Thread-capable options; do not assume every Apple TV or HomePod generation is identical.
- For Tapo, keep the controller and plug on the same permitted local network. Guest isolation, another VLAN or a different NAT can prevent discovery even while cloud app control works.
- Update the device and hub using the supported procedure. When adding a previously commissioned Matter accessory to another platform, generate the appropriate new pairing code rather than blindly repeating the printed QR.
- Before factory-resetting, read the exact model instructions and record routines you will need to rebuild. Do not reset every household hub because an internet comment suggests it.
Sources: TP-Link Matter troubleshooting, TP-Link setup/multi-admin guide and Apple’s hub instructions. If the network is managed by someone else, ask that person about permitted discovery; do not disable their network protections.
Offline use, household access and the next move
On/off Matter control can be local, but its local network, controller and power still matter. Eve documents device schedules independent of the phone/internet through its supported app route. That is distinct from every platform automation or remote command surviving every outage. Keep a usable button and an ordinary light available.
Decide who can control shared lamps and who owns the accounts. Save setup codes privately with the equipment, then remove old members or reset according to the transfer instructions when appropriate. At the next address, rejoin the permitted network and check your real routines rather than assuming the same room names and controller placement will work.

Two final buying questions
Does the cheaper plug replace all Eve features? No. P125M substitutes for basic switching, not Eve’s metering or Thread role. If energy history is your main goal, compare a specifically metering-capable alternative rather than treating this as a like-for-like meter contest.
Will Thread fix bad landlord Wi-Fi? Not by itself. It changes the accessory’s radio link; it does not remove the controller’s upstream requirements or permission constraints. Start with the existing rental-network guide if device discovery is the actual problem.

Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- Plug-in equipment is removable. Keep the button accessible and check that the lamp resumes correctly when power is restored.
- Ecosystem fit
- Eve needs Matter control plus a Thread border router. P125M uses Wi-Fi, but Apple Home still requires its home hub.
- Offline & shared use
- Separate local on/off, device schedules and remote access. Local power and the necessary controller/network must remain available.
- Complete ownership cost
- Compare whole packs and missing hub equipment. Eve adds metering; this Canadian P125M does not. Neither promises an electricity saving.
- At the next address
- Keep private setup codes, review shared accounts, and recheck the permitted network and routines after moving.

Need dimming instead of on/off?
An on/off plug cannot dim an ordinary bulb. Choose the right lamp-control approach before buying accessories.
