Aqara Hub M3 vs SwitchBot Hub 2: choose for the devices you already own
Two boxes called smart-home hubs can solve different problems. Before replacing a working setup, write down the devices you own and the app where you want to control them. This comparison follows those connections rather than declaring one brand universally better. It is based on documentation checked October 22, 2026; we have not tested either hub.
We compared current manufacturer documentation and relevant owner questions. We have not hands-on tested these products. US and Canadian models, offers and requirements are distinguished; ordinary retailer links earn us no commission.
Aqara kit
Start with M3's supported roles
Check every exact accessory and Matter device type; a Zigbee radio is not universal Zigbee compatibility.
SwitchBot kit
Bridge devices you already own
Check Hub 2's current secondary-device list, firmware and the destination platform's controller.
Mixed home
You may need two different bridges
Sharing devices through Matter does not merge every proprietary feature or remove the original hubs.
Controller, bridge and radio are separate jobs
A Matter controller manages supported Matter accessories inside a platform. A bridge exposes supported accessories from another system. A Thread border router provides the network route for Thread devices. Aqara documents all three roles for M3. SwitchBot documents Hub 2 as a bridge for supported SwitchBot accessories; its setup instructions separately require the target platform's Matter controller.
That distinction changes the basket. Someone who already has a suitable Apple home hub and SwitchBot curtains may need a bridge. Someone building an Aqara Home network of supported Thread and Zigbee devices has a different requirement. Neither situation is solved by choosing the box with the longest wireless-protocol list.
Features that change the purchase
| Question | Aqara Hub M3 | SwitchBot Hub 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Main device family | Supported Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices; supported third-party Matter devices | Supported SwitchBot accessories and compatible infrared appliances |
| Matter role | Controller and bridge | Bridge; destination controller separate |
| Thread route | Border router built in | Not a substitute for a Thread border router |
| Network placement | Dual-band Wi-Fi or Ethernet; PoE option | 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; USB-powered placement |
| Everyday interaction | Aqara Home and supported connected platforms | Display, temperature/humidity sensor cable and two scene buttons |
| Infrared | Supported IR control and AC bridging | Supported IR control; bridged controls vary by device and platform |
Build one complete working basket
Aqara example: an M3, the compatible power supply or PoE equipment required by the chosen package, one explicitly supported Aqara contact sensor, and a supported light or plug. Confirm the exact light and the open/close automation in Aqara Home before adding more rooms. A mains lamp still needs its normal physical control.
SwitchBot example: an existing Curtain 3, Hub 2 with its specified sensor cable and power supply, and your existing supported Matter controller if you want that platform. Start by confirming the curtain works in SwitchBot, then expose it through Hub 2's Matter setup. A phone app alone is not the entire Matter infrastructure.
For each market, total the hub + missing power equipment + accessories + destination controller, if required + taxes/shipping. We have not established a comparable in-stock USD/CAD pair, so there is no honest current price winner here. Avoid an imported regional bundle merely because its headline price is lower.
Mixed-brand ownership does not mean one universal hub
Aqara's supported Zigbee family and its supported third-party Matter devices are different lists. Do not assume M3 can directly pair your SONOFF Zigbee sensor or every Hue bulb. A supported Matter bridge can provide a different route, but the original bridge remains part of that setup.
For Hub 2, consult SwitchBot's current Matter compatibility page for the exact accessory. Some items are beta or restricted to another hub generation. A product working in SwitchBot does not establish that every function appears in Apple Home, Google Home or SmartThings. Hub 3 and newer Aqara hubs also exist; compare their documented roles before paying for capabilities you do not need, without treating them as the same models reviewed here.
When the app works but the household automation does not
Owner discussions repeatedly raise confusing Matter setup and missing infrared controls. They identify questions to investigate, not failure rates. First identify which link failed: accessory to brand app, brand hub to platform, or platform automation to light. Record the accessory, hub firmware and platform version. Update through official instructions and check the accessory's supported actions before resetting anything.
For an IR appliance, verify the exact remote code and the functions you use daily. Working power and temperature controls do not prove that swing, fan speed or every mode is bridged. Keep the original remote accessible. If shared building Wi-Fi prevents local discovery, request a supported network arrangement; another hub is not permission to bypass building restrictions.
Check offline behaviour and account access separately
Aqara documents local automation capabilities for M3, while cloud push notifications still need internet. That does not certify every cross-platform routine as offline. Check the whole path you intend to use, including the destination controller, lights and any cloud-linked action. We have not performed outage testing.
Give household members only the access they need and agree which routines can run unattended. A temperature display can be useful without enabling location tracking. Neither hub is a reason to hand a shared household your primary account password. Document a manual action that still works when an app, network or automation is unavailable.
Keep, move or buy nothing
If your existing bridge already exposes the required actions, keep it. If the only problem is switching one lamp, its switch or a compatible physical remote may solve it without another account or powered box. Extra hub capacity is not itself a renter benefit.
Before moving, record device names and automations, remove old household invitations where appropriate and pack each hub with its correct supply and cables. Remove permitted mounts using their instructions. At the next address, recheck network access, IR sightlines and the actual automation before relying on it. If transferring ownership, use the documented removal/reset process rather than leaving your account attached.

Aqara Hub M3
Consider it if Aqara Home, supported Aqara accessories and the controller/Thread roles are specifically required.
Skip it if Your existing hub already supplies the required route.

SwitchBot Hub 2
Consider it if Supported SwitchBot devices need hub functions or bridging into an existing Matter platform.
Skip it if You need a general Matter controller or Thread border router.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- Both are movable powered hubs; network and accessory placement must be checked again.
- Ecosystem fit
- M3's controller/Thread roles and Hub 2's SwitchBot bridge role are different purchases.
- Offline & shared use
- Check the exact complete automation; local capability is not an all-functions outage guarantee.
- Complete ownership cost
- Count power, accessories and any destination controller; no matched regional price basket verified.
- At the next address
- Retain cables, record assignments and review household/account access.

Manufacturer specifications establish supported features, not measured performance, reliability or savings. Our recommendation is an editorial judgment about the complete setup. Linked owner discussions are anecdotal and dated; current official instructions take precedence.
