Philips Hue vs Tapo L535E: is premium lighting worth it in a rental?
For two rental lamps, the cheaper bulb can cover the everyday job: dimming, colour and schedules. Hue becomes more interesting when you want a coordinated lighting system with dedicated controls. The question is which extra functions you will actually use—and what they cost together.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation, Canadian offers and selected owner discussions. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

Hue vs Tapo: the differences that change the purchase
| Decision | Tapo L535E | Hue A19 White and Color Ambiance, 1100 |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; Bluetooth is for setup | Bluetooth in-room, or Zigbee through a Hue Bridge |
| White light and brightness | The cited 1100-lumen specification lists 2500–6500 K. Canadian V3.20 overview instead says 1055 lumens: match the hardware. | Current 9.5 W full-spectrum model: 1000–20000 K; 1100 lumens at 4000 K |
| Low dimming | App-controlled dimming; no comparable measured minimum established here | Maker claims dimming to 0.2% for this generation; not our measurement |
| Apple Home / Matter | Direct Matter integration over Wi-Fi, with the platform’s required controller | Hue’s documented Bridge route; Bluetooth alone is not the equivalent Matter setup |
| Physical control | Do not assume an arbitrary smart button is compatible; price its supported automation route | Choose a supported Hue remote/button and its documented setup |
| Ordinary lamp switch turned off | No power means no app control | No power means no app control |

Canadian price snapshot: compare the room, not the unit label
| Basket | Tapo L535E | Hue 1100 full-spectrum |
|---|---|---|
| Linked package | 2 bulbs: $35.51 total | 1 bulb: $69.98 |
| One lamp, buying the linked pack | $35.51 outlay; one bulb left over | $69.98 bulb only |
| Two lamps | $35.51 for one two-pack | $139.96 for two singles |
| Automation / physical controls | Add any missing platform controller and supported button | Add a compatible Bridge and chosen remote if needed; not included above |

At these observed offers, the two-lamp bulb-only difference is $104.45. That is arithmetic, not a prediction of future savings. Compare a Hue starter kit separately: a bundle can change the total. The Tapo offer was fulfilled/sold by Amazon US and displayed an import notice; confirm Canadian suitability, warranty and final charges. The Hue offer was sold by Amazon.ca. Offers can change, and these are not live prices.
For a fair basket use: packages actually needed + missing hub/Bridge + chosen controls + tax and delivery. Count equipment you already own as no new purchase; a spare bulb is not a cash saving if you will never use it. Check the Tapo two-pack · Check the Hue single.
When Hue earns the premium—and when Tapo is enough
A bedside or desk lamp: Tapo is the lower-outlay starting point in the observed offers. Make a short list: your desired bedtime brightness, two favourite white tones and one routine. If those are the whole job, additional Hue equipment needs a specific reason.
Several lamps and household controls: Hue offers a documented Bridge lighting system and dedicated accessories. Its current full-spectrum bulb also specifies a wider white-temperature range and a very low dimming floor. Those are concrete reasons to investigate it; they do not prove that it will look better to you or never disconnect.
Existing Hue household: another compatible Hue bulb can reuse your setup. Starting a second brand solely to save on one bulb may add another app and household routine. Conversely, owning one Tapo camera does not make every Hue benefit irrelevant. Compare what is already installed, not brand loyalty.
Owner reports: useful warnings, not a reliability league table
In a 2025 Reddit L535E setup discussion, an owner found Tapo-only setup straightforward but described difficulty adding other platforms. Their suggested pairing order differs from TP-Link’s current recommendation. That makes the thread a warning to check the official process—not a universal installation recipe.
The Hue offer’s Canadian customer reviews include praise for the system and low-effort use, alongside complaints about price, durability and app behaviour. We did not verify the installations, causes or whether every review concerns this exact generation. Do not turn the displayed rating, pooled reviews or a handful of posts into a failure rate.
Practical response: keep packaging and test the functions you bought it for during the retailer’s applicable return period: your actual low-light scene, household control, power restoration and platform access. This is a suggested buyer check, not a test we performed.
Avoid the common Matter and shared-Wi-Fi dead end
- Tapo app works, Apple Home does not: check the home hub, firmware and local-network discovery before buying another bulb. Apple says a home hub is required for Matter accessories in Home.
- Adding a second platform: follow the existing platform’s sharing/new pairing-code procedure. TP-Link says a new code can be needed once a device is already commissioned; the printed QR is not always the next step.
- Guest or landlord Wi-Fi: ask whether local devices can communicate and whether permitted controller access is possible. TP-Link requires the controller and accessory on the same local network. Do not change somebody else’s router or weaken its security.
- Wall switch or lamp dimmer: keep power available for smart control. Do not put these bulbs behind an ordinary dimmer; use the exact fixture and bulb instructions.
TP-Link’s official Matter troubleshooting and Apple’s home-hub requirements are the starting points. A Hue bulb’s Zigbee link also does not give you permission or an automatic way to connect its Bridge to a managed network. See the shared-Wi-Fi checks before building either system.
What works locally, and what follows you when moving
Separate three events: internet loss, router/local-network loss and loss of electricity. They are not the same test. Hue Bluetooth provides nearby phone control within its limits; a powered Bridge arrangement uses a local Zigbee lighting network. Tapo’s Matter route supports local platform control, but the controller and local network still need to work. Remote access and voice/cloud services have additional dependencies.
Retain the original rental bulbs. Keep the new bulbs’ setup codes, Bridge and controllers together privately; do not publish QR codes. Review household access, change the permitted network at the next home and recreate room routines as needed. A bulb has no memory of which new lamp is safe: recheck fixture and dimmer suitability.

Questions to settle before ordering
Can I use a Hue Bridge to make the Tapo bulb part of Hue? Do not assume so. These are different connection routes; Matter support is not evidence that a Hue Bridge accepts an arbitrary Wi-Fi bulb. Use a supported platform to coordinate devices only where the platform documents the required features.
Do I need colour at all? If you only want scheduled on/off lighting, keep the existing bulb and consider a suitable timer or plug. If you want to dim an ordinary dimmable bulb with a physical remote, read Caséta lamp dimmer versus smart plug; that is a different load-control approach.

Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- Screw-in E26 bulbs travel easily; keep original bulbs and do not modify switches or wiring.
- Ecosystem fit
- Tapo uses Wi-Fi/Matter; Hue uses Bluetooth or Zigbee through its Bridge. Platform and accessory support are separate purchases and checks.
- Offline & shared use
- Keep power on. Distinguish internet loss from local-network or electricity loss; remote access is not an offline feature.
- Complete ownership cost
- Compare packages needed for the room, any Bridge/controller, remotes, import conditions and delivery. The dated prices are not live offers.
- At the next address
- Pack controllers and private setup codes together, remove old household access and recheck fixtures and the permitted new network.
