Home Assistant Green for renters: price the complete kit
Home Assistant Green is a small automation computer, not a box with every smart-home radio inside. A portable rental kit starts with the devices you want to control and the network connection you are allowed to use.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- The hub and separate radios can move as a kit. Keep labelled power, Ethernet and USB components together.
- Ecosystem fit
- Home Assistant integrations vary by exact device. Green has no onboard radios; choose supported add-ons deliberately.
- Offline & shared use
- Local hardware does not make every integration local. Cloud-based accessories may still need internet and vendor accounts.
- Complete ownership cost
- Include radio adapters, suitable devices, backup storage and any optional remote-access subscription you choose.
- At the next address
- Create a private backup before dismantling, then recheck network, radio placement, devices and household permissions.
Documentation-based fit assessment, not a hands-on test or compatibility certification.
Start with three devices, not a promise to automate everything
List three specific jobs and the exact devices involved. For example, a permitted plug-in lamp, an occupancy sensor and a physical control are a more useful starting point than “all brands.” Look up each model in Home Assistant’s official integration documentation, including its connection and limitations.
If your current app already handles those jobs, a new local hub may add maintenance without a useful result. Home Assistant suits someone willing to handle updates, credentials and backups. We have not tested a complete starter kit and do not certify a mixed collection of products as compatible.
The parts you may need
| Component | What to check |
|---|---|
| Home Assistant Green | Home Assistant OS is preinstalled; provide power and Ethernet |
| Zigbee devices | A supported coordinator such as Connect ZBT-2 configured for Zigbee |
| Thread devices | Compatible Thread infrastructure plus the documented Matter/Thread setup |
| Bluetooth devices | A supported Bluetooth adapter or documented proxy arrangement |
| Remote access | Choose a supported secure method; optional cloud service is separate |
Confirm Ethernet before ordering
Green uses its wired network connection. A rental that supplies only a browser login on shared Wi-Fi is a different starting point from a supported private Ethernet handoff. Check permission and local device communication with the network administrator before buying an additional router or hub.
One household can have internet access while its devices remain isolated from one another. Do not assume Green cures that restriction or exposes your devices safely by itself. Use the landlord Wi-Fi checklist to establish the permitted network design first.
Choose one radio job at a time
Connect ZBT-2 is official add-on hardware for a Zigbee or Thread network; configure it for the selected role using the current documentation. Do not treat a single adapter as an automatic simultaneous replacement for every radio or every vendor bridge. A separate Bluetooth requirement needs its own supported route.
An existing compatible platform hub may already provide Thread infrastructure. Determine what you have before buying duplicate hardware. Keep USB radio placement and extension-cable guidance in mind, and do not hide the radio among tightly packed metal equipment because the computer itself fits there.
Local control still needs a dependency check
For each integration, ask what happens when the internet, vendor service or hub stops. An automation computer in your home can run local work, but a cloud-dependent accessory can still interrupt the result. Keep physical controls for essential everyday actions while evaluating the system.
Include optional remote-access fees only if you need that service, and compare the current terms. Do not publish the hub directly to the internet or turn off authentication to make it reachable. Backups can contain private configuration and credentials; keep them outside public website folders and protect any recovery keys.

Consider it if: you want to maintain Home Assistant and have checked Ethernet and the exact accessory connections
Skip it if: you expect built-in radios or want a system with no ongoing administration
Green hub; radios for Zigbee, Thread or Bluetooth are not built in.

Build a kit you can recover and move
Before expanding, check one ordinary daily routine, restart behaviour and a documented backup/recovery procedure. Record model numbers and the adapters used. These are suggested owner checks; this guide does not claim measured uptime or a successful restoration in your home.
Before moving, make a private backup, shut down as documented and pack the hub, radios and supplies together. At the new address, rebuild the permitted network and retest routines before relying on them. If ownership changes, follow supported reset/transfer procedures instead of handing over your personal account.

Our recommendations are conditional judgments about system fit, required components and renter constraints. Manufacturer features are not independent performance measurements. Check current instructions for the exact regional hardware.
