Dohm Classic vs LectroFan EVO: sound machines for an apartment
A sound machine adds a background sound; it does not stop noise travelling through a wall. That distinction matters before choosing between a real-fan Dohm Classic and the digitally generated sounds of LectroFan EVO.
We reviewed manufacturer documentation and Canadian product listings. We have not hands-on tested these products for this guide. Retailer links are ordinary links; we earn no commission from them.

The renter’s lens
Portability & ecosystem fit
- Pack, place & remove
- Both need a stable open surface and appropriate external power. The 120 V North American Dohm Classic is not a universal-voltage rechargeable travel machine.
- Ecosystem fit
- Their physical controls avoid a phone account for ordinary operation. This is background-sound equipment, not a smart-home integration or a substitute for soundproofing.
- Offline & shared use
- The documented local controls do not need a network. Electrical power still matters; check EVO’s supplied cable and adapter rather than assuming an internal battery.
- Complete ownership cost
- Agree on placement and sound level with others. Verify the exact package and do not assume a US manufacturer trial applies to a Canadian marketplace purchase.
- At the next address
- Pack the correct power equipment and recheck placement and household preferences. The old volume setting need not suit the new room.
Documentation-based fit assessment, not a hands-on test or compatibility certification.
Decide whether adding sound is welcome
Ask everyone sharing the room whether a steady background sound is acceptable. One person’s preferred tone can be another person’s distraction. Agree on a starting location and an easy way to turn it down or off. A personal preference should not become a new noise problem for the household or adjacent unit.
First try a background-sound feature you already have at a modest setting. That experiment can help establish whether you like added sound at all, although it cannot reproduce the exact two machines. If the real issue is a rattling appliance or avoidable late-night television, address that cause before shopping for masking equipment.
Real fan or generated sound?
| Decision | Yogasleep Dohm Classic | LectroFan EVO |
|---|---|---|
| Sound source | Actual internal fan motor | Electronically generated sound; no moving fan |
| Choice | Two speeds and rotating tone adjustment | 22 options across fan, noise and ocean sounds |
| Routine | Physical switch and rotating cap/collar | Physical buttons and optional timer |
| Power approach | 120 V AC plug-in model for US/Canada | External power; check supplied USB cable and adapter |
| A poor reason to buy | Expecting it to cool the room like a normal fan | Assuming more sound choices guarantee better masking |
The word “fan” describes how Dohm makes its sound, not a promise of useful room cooling. EVO’s fan sounds are generated electronically. Neither requires a phone account merely to operate its physical controls, which can simplify use on a shared bedside table.
Choose the routine you will actually use
Dohm Classic’s appeal is the limited decision: choose a speed and adjust the cap and collar. If you already know you prefer a steady mechanical fan character, that can be enough. The Classic comparison is specifically the two-speed plug-in model, not a Dohm Uno, Nova or rechargeable Yogasleep travel machine.
EVO suits someone who wants to try different sound characters without changing machines. Its official manual describes an optional timer in one-hour steps, up to eight hours. Confirm the controls against the manual supplied with your unit; similar-looking LectroFan products are not necessarily the EVO. More buttons only add value if you will use them.
Placement is part of the purchase
Measure a stable, open surface with a suitable nearby outlet. Follow the manufacturer’s clearance and placement instructions; keep openings clear, do not cover the unit with bedding and route cables where they cannot be pulled or tripped over. Neither machine needs to be attached permanently to a landlord’s wall.
Start low rather than using maximum volume as a buying goal. The appropriate setup depends on the room and everyone affected by it. Keep important household alerts audible and follow the device instructions. This is an adult household buying comparison, not infant placement guidance, a sound-exposure recommendation or treatment advice.
What masking cannot guarantee
A background sound can change what a listener notices, but it does not improve the wall’s construction or stop impact vibration. We have not measured these machines, room acoustics or masking performance. We cannot promise that either will cover footsteps, bass, a neighbour’s voice or a particular street sound.
Likewise, making a conversation less noticeable is not the same as making it private. For a confidential call, change the time or location and use an appropriate private space. Do not rely on a sound machine to protect sensitive information in a room someone else can enter. Building and household problems still need their own practical response.
Products for the two approaches
Dohm Classic, real fan

Skip it if: you want a rechargeable portable machine, multiple digital sounds or a timer built into this Classic model
White 120 V plug-in machine; not a rechargeable travel model.

Compare ownership before ordering
Check the exact Canadian listing, included power equipment, seller and return rules. Manufacturer-direct US trial or shipping offers do not automatically apply to a Canadian marketplace purchase. Neither a changing retailer star rating nor a long list of uses establishes that the sound will suit you.
Keep the manual and power specifications with your moving supplies. A 120 V North American Dohm Classic should not be treated as a universal-voltage travel appliance. At the next address, reassess placement and household preferences instead of carrying over the old volume setting unchanged. If an existing device already provides an acceptable routine, no new machine is necessary.
